Making its way from simple beach side parties to its debut in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Thousand Island dressing has become a special homemade sauce to enhance the flavors of a variety of foods. The tangy yet sweet tasting sauce can be used as an accompaniment to salads, seafood, crudités, burgers, and sandwiches.

You don’t have to go out to buy a bottled version of the sauce when you can make it yourself at home with this very simple recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish (or chopped pickles)
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped onion
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

 

Directions

  1. Combine all the above ingredients in a bowl, or in a food processor and mix well, until a paste forms.
  1. Place the dressing in the refrigerator for a few minutes before serving.
