Eye pain can be caused by a number of factors – eyestrain, allergies, infections or fatigue. This pain can be intense and irritable, depending on the reason of the sore. To relieve yourself from the pain, you can try a few of these tricks with a few simple home remedies and avoid wearing an eye patch. If the eye pain is related to an infection, allergy, or eyestrain, you must consult a physician or an eye specialist to aid you in making the eyes stop hurting.

 

  • Use cold compress over the eyes. This aids in eyes that are swollen or red. Simple soak a clean washcloth in cool water, wring it, and then place it over the eyes while lying on your back. Remove after 20 minutes, and repeat to get further comfort. You can also use a clean spoon and place it in the freezer for 15 minutes. Place the spoon over the eye. Repeat the method n the other eye. You can place an ice cube in a towel and use it as a compress for the eyes. Place over the eye for 5 minutes and repeat over the other eye.

 

  • Wash the eyes with water. If the eyes are itchy due to dust or allergens, you should flush with lukewarm water. Lean over a sink and let the eyes be washed with water for a few minutes. You can also go in the shower and do this, but with lukewarm water.

 

  • Use an eyewash to flush the eyes out. Rinse the eyes with a commercial eyewash to remove all traces of water or chlorine after a swim.

 

  • Place a herbal tea bag as a compress. Chamomile, calendula, eyebright, Oregon grape, and goldenseal have soothing properties for the eyes. Place the teabags in a mug of boiling water, and remove them after 5 minutes. Squeeze the liquid from the tea bags, and place the teabags on the eyes when they have cooled.

 

  • Use eye drops. You can purchase over-the-counter eye drops for various eye issues. Antihistamine eye drops can be used for allergy fighting, while lubricating eye drops relieve itchiness and moisturize the eyes.

 

  • Stop rubbing or touching the eyes. The more your hand goes on them, the more their pain will intensify. Also avoid wearing eye makeup, and do not touch your eyes after playing with pets.

 

  • Wear glasses when you go out. This will add a protective layer in front of the eyes and keep allergens away. Sunglasses should be worn when you step out of the house.

 

  • Remove your contacts. If you are getting irritated, maybe your contacts need to be changed or cleaned. Remove them for a few hours to stop any irritation.

 

  • Rest the eyes. Sleep a few hours to give your eyes some rest and relief from eye strain. Get off the road for too long or the computer screen, or the book you are reading. Your eyes need rest.

 

  • Visit an eye specialist to check your eyeglass prescription. You may not know but your glasses prescription and measures may have changed.
