Animals are born with thick furry skinned coats, but they still require warmth and care during the chilly seasons. The harsh winters are the hardest for animals as they mostly live outdoors. To keep them healthy throughout the winter, you should start thinking about their proper care.

Goats are very strong animals that can tolerate the cold climates, yet a little care to keep them comfortable is essential.

Here is how you can care for goats in the winters:

  • When it comes to shelter, it is important to build a cozy place for them to abide in when it rains or snows. Goats tend to stay indoors when anything falls from the sky. Shelter is also important to keep them from being exposed to cold winds. The shelter should be ventilated and be cleaned frequently to avoid ammonia buildup.

  • The goats will need bedding for resting and not sleeping on the cold floor. Keep the floor covered with wood shavings, straws or cloth.

  • Store ample amounts of food for the goats, which should be grass hay, as it will keep the goats warm. Feeding goats in a good amount will aid in maintaining their body temperature. If hay is not available, feed the goats grain in a greater amount.

  • Give the goats warm water in the winters, as it will make their internal body temperature high. Remember, the water that may burn our tongues may be hot for us, but it wont be as hot for these goats as their body temperature is higher than humans. Give the goats warmed water twice a day.

  • If the temperatures of the area you live in fall too low, insulate the barn. This may be costly, but it is a good investment for the long run as your animals will breed and stay healthy in a warm environment.

  • Provide the goats with vitamins and minerals like zinc, selenium and copper. This will aid in fur growth, which then makes the goats warm.
